Percussion Hire for professional theatre

In the latter part of 2022 we continued to provide Percussion Hire for professional theatre productions in London’s West End, as well as international touring productions.

This includes the international tour of Bat Out of Hell: The Musical, and the UK premiere of Allegiance at London’s Charing Cross Theatre, along with other productions at the Bloomsbury Theatre, and the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone.

Home Alone in Concert

We were back at the Royal Albert Hall with the Cinematic Sinfonia in December 2022, contracting the musicians for two performances of Home Alone in Concert. We provided 83 professional musicians, along with percussion hire, backline hire and orchestral management.

Christmas at the movies

In December 2022 we continued our association with Jack Campey Productions and the Studio Orchestra, providing orchestral contracting services, percussion hire, backline hire and orchestral music hire for a large-scale film music concert at Cheltenham Town Hall.

The orchestra consisted of 66 professional musicians, who were conducted by Jack Campey in a programme solely featuring festive film scores.

BBC Singers at Kings Place

We started December 2022 providing Percussion Hire for the BBC Singers, for a day of rehearsals at BBC Maida Vale Studios, followed by a broadcast concert at Kings Place.

The range of specialist instruments we supplied included our five-octave Adams Marimba, Adams Vibraphone, Crotales and a Wind Gong.

Evelyn Glennie + Trio HLK

Throughout 2022 we’ve continued to provide specialist Percussion Hire for the majority of Dame Evelyn Glennie’s UK dates, including orchestral concerto performances in Bristol, Glasgow and London.

On Thursday 1 December 2022 we provided Percussion Hire for a performance Evelyn gave in collaboration with Trio HLK at the Stoller Hall in Manchester, including our five-octave Adams Marimba, Adams Timpani and Adams Vibraphone.

Orchestral Hire Library expansion

Our Orchestral Hire Library continues to expand at a rate of knots, and now features over 800 sets of music. It’s used by orchestra’s choirs and ensembles all over the world, from places as diverse as Finland, Puerto Rico, and the Isle of Man!

October 2022 Percussion Hire

Numerous London-based orchestras relied on our Percussion Hire services during October 2022, including the London Phoenix Orchestra, the Orchestra of the City, and Orchestra Vitae.

We also provided Percussion Hire for a James Bond Concert Spectacular presented by Q The Music at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End (pictured).

British Sinfonietta at Swansea International Festival

On Saturday 29 October 2022 we provided orchestral contracting services, percussion hire, and orchestral music hire for a large-scale concert at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, as part of Swansea International Festival.

The programme featured a new commission from Sir Karl Jenkins (who conducted the premiere), along with soloist Catrin Finch.

Summer 2022 Percussion Hire

Over the summer our Percussion Hire department was kept busy, providing high-quality instruments for clients all over the UK.

This included Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Proms concerts in Hampshire, Shrewsbury Proms in the Park in Shropshire, and Britten Pears Arts at Snape Maltings in Suffolk.

Our drivers were also kept busy in and around London, including drop-offs at Cafe OTO, the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone, Kensington Town Hall, and Spitfire Audio.

Amadeus Orchestra Academy 2022

In July 2022 we provided Percussion Hire for the Amadeus Orchestra Academy course, which took place at Perrot Hill School in Somerset.

Following a few days of rehearsals at the school, we provided transport services to move the orchestra’s equipment to Wiltshire Music Centre, followed by Exeter Cathedral for the final concert of the course.

Mahler 8 at Cheltenham Festival

On Saturday 16 July 2022 we contracted 94 musicians for the British Sinfonietta, to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 at Gloucester Cathedral, as part of Cheltenham Music Festival. The concert was conducted by Adrian Partington.

Alongside the standard orchestral instruments we also contracted players for Celesta, Harmonium, Mandolin and Piano.

The concert was a sell out, and plans are already in place for an equally epic performance at the 2024 Cheltenham Music Festival!

Following a busy start to the year, the British Sinfonietta will continue performing throughout the UK over the summer.

Highlights include the orchestra’s first visit to Huddersfield in June, an epic performance of Mahler 8 at Cheltenham Music Festival in July, and a first visit to Chester Cathedral in August.

Russell Watson in Manchester

On Wednesday 15 June 2022 we provided a range of professional music services for a concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, featuring Russell Watson.

Our primary role was contracting musicians and singers, a total of 38 personnel.

We also provided percussion hire for the event, as well as on-site music preparation services.

Dame Evelyn Glennie & BBCSSO

On Saturday 11 June 2022 we provided Percussion Hire for Dame Evelyn Glennie’s performance of James MacMillan’s Veni, Veni, Emmanuel with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, considered by many to be the best percussion concerto of all time.

The range of instruments we supplied included our Adams five octave Marimba, Adams Vibraphone, SABIAN gongs, and a large rig of drums featuring Bongos, Congas, Timbales and Toms.

We also provided transport services, moving Evelyn’s Bass Tubular Bells from her base in Cambridgeshire to Glasgow, and back again.

St Davids Cathedral Festival 2022

At the start of June 2022 we returned to St Davids Cathedral Festival in Pembrokeshire with the British Sinfonietta, in what would’ve been their 8th consecutive year at the festival, had it not been for 2 years of postponements due to the pandemic.

The main event was an all-Handel programme, which included hire Overture to An Occasional Oratorio, Concerto Grosso in B-flat major, and Four Coronation Anthems.

The following morning we provided a small string ensemble to perform music by Haydn and Mozart during a service.

BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace

On Saturday 4 June 2022 we provided Percussion Hire for the BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace, which was broadcast live on BBC One.

The list of instruments we provided included Crotales, Djembe and a Dundun, a large African drum, which was used to accompany a performance by the West End cast of Disney’s The Lion King.

Sō Percussion at Norfolk & Norwich Festival

On Wednesday 18 May 2022 we provided Percussion Hire for a concert by the American ensemble Sō Percussion, for a concert at Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

The instruments we provided included our Adams five octave Marimba, our Adams Vibraphone, our large Adams Bass Drum, and Crotales.

Tour with Dame Evelyn Glennie & Chineke!

In May 2022 we joined Dame Evelyn Glennie and the Chineke! Orchestra for an enjoyable short tour, collaborating to perform the premiere of new commission by Jill Jarman.

We supplied a range of specialist percussion instruments for the project, including our Adams five octave Marimba, gongs, temple blocks and a compact drum kit, as well as some backline.

Percussion Hire for Anyone Can Whistle

We recently provided six week of Percussion Hire at Southwark Playhouse in London, for a new production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Anyone Can Whistle.

We are regularly providing Backline & Percussion Hire for theatre productions in and around London, as well as for UK tours.

British Sinfonietta in April 2022

The British Sinfonietta performed a series of choral concerts around the UK in April 2022.

First up was a concert with Swansea Philharmonic Choir at the Brangwyn Hall in South Wales, featuring Paul Mealor’s Stabat Mater, and The Armed Man by Sir Karl Jenkins, and conducted by Jonathan Rogers.

Other highlights included a concert with the London Welsh Chorale conducted by Edward-Rhys Harry in London, a concert with Swindon Choral Society in Cirencester conducted by Elinor Cooper, along with the orchestra’s first visit to Norfolk, performing music by Duruflé and Poulenc with King’s Lynn Festival Chorus, conducted by Ben Horden.

Percussion Hire busyness

The final weekend of March 2022 provides a snapshot of how busy our Percussion Hire department has become, since we launched our Percussion Hire London subsidiary in November 2021.

In the space of 4 days we provided five-octave Marimba hire for a private customer in Ealing, Vibraphone hire for an event in Milton Keynes, five-octave Marimba hire in Greenwich for the Centre for Young Musicians, Timpani hire for a concert in Bristol, Timpani hire for a concert in Chingford, Timpani hire for a show at Southwark Playhouse, Timpani hire for a concert in Swansea, and a full selection of backline & percussion hire for Camden Music Service at LSO St Luke’s.

Percussion Hire London

Following an increase in demand of our percussion hire services in Greater London over the previous few months, in November 2021 we launched a new subsidiary; Percussion Hire London.

This dedicated department will continue to provide percussion instruments to bands, ensembles, orchestras and recording studios in London and the surrounding areas.

As well as our in-house hire stock we are working with a network of professional percussionists throughout Greater London, in order to offer the largest possible choice of instruments, and to cover the widest possible area.

Percussion Hire in November 2021

Our Percussion Hire department was kept busy during November 2021, as we supplied high-quality instruments to clients throughout the UK.

One particular highlight was providing our five-octave Adams Marimba for a performance by Dame Evelyn Glennie at St Paul’s Cathedral, in association with Help Musicians. Later the same day we provided Percussion Hire for Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra in Shropshire.

The Sound of Hollywood in Concert

In November 2021 we provided orchestral contracting services, percussion hire and backline hire for The Studio Orchestra, for a concert at Cheltenham Town Hall.

The orchestra consisted of 67 professional musicians, who were conducted by Jack Campey in a programme solely featuring classic film scores.

Choral Concerts Resume

Choral concerts have always represented the core of the British Sinfonietta’s concert schedule, and over the last 10 years we have built up close relationships with dozens of choirs throughout the UK.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the orchestra’s programme of choral concerts for 2020 came to an abrupbt stop, following our first one for the year on 29 February. 

Following a wait of 21 months, the orchestra performed its first choral concert of 2021 with Bristol Choral Society at Bristol Cathedral on Saturday 6 November. The varied programme featured music by Poston, Finzi, Sibelius, Gustav Holst, Imogen Holst, and Vaughan Williams.

Dame Evelyn Glennie
World Doctors Orchestra

In early October 2021 we provided percussion hire and backline for the World Doctors Orchestra, and their guest soloist Dame Evelyn Glennie.

This encompassed three days of rehearsals at The Warehouse, Waterloo, followed by a concert at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds, and a concert at the Barbican.

We had a percusson technician on site throughout the five days, and also provided transport services.

ParalympicsGB Homecoming

On Sunday 12 September 2021 we provided percussion hire and equipment hire for the ParalympicsGB Homecoming event at the SSE Arena in Wembley.

This included specialist percussion hire for Dame Evelyn Glennie, who was one of the featured artists in the televised event, such as Octobans and Roto-Toms.

Bat Out of Hell: The Musical

In August 2021 we provided music preparation and printing services for the Bat Out of Hell: The Musical International Tour, encompassing more than 1,000 pages of music.

The tour started in Manchester in September 2021, before heading out around the UK and beyond.

Back on stage

On Saturday 10 July 2021 we were involved in our first orchestral project since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, contracting the British Sinfonietta for a televised concert for Rondo Media, filmed behind closed doors on the site of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Denbighshire.

The concert was conducted by Benjamin Pope, and featured a number of soloists, including Catrin Finch (Harp) and Rhian Lois (Soprano).

Alongside 40 professional musicians we also provided music preparation services (including new bespoke orchestrations), percussion hire, and backline hire.

Percussion Hire from AMS

Our Percussion Hire department has been busier than ever in the last few months of 2019, providing percussion instruments for ensembles and orchestras all over the UK.

This has included two concerts with the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, two concerts with the Royal Greenwich Brass Band in South East London, a concert with the London Phoenix Orchestra in Westminster, Central London, a concert with Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra in Shropshire, and two Christmas concerts featuring The Snowman with the Mozart Symphony Orchestra, at Cagodan Hall in Central London, and Cheltenham Town Hall.

The Music of John Williams - In Concert

In September 2019 we provided orchestral contracting services for The Studio Orchestra, for a rehearsal in Worcester and a concert at Cheltenham Town Hall.

The orchestra consisted of 49 professional musicians, who were conducted by Jack Campey in a programme solely featuring the film scores of John Williams.

Llangollen with Rolando Villazón

In July 2019 we returned to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod for two evening concerts. We have been providing professional musicians to the festival regularly since 2012.

The first concert was an opera gala, featuring the Mexican Tenor Rolando Villazón  along with Sopranos Rhian Lois and Charlotte Hoather  James Hendry was conducting. Highlights were broadcast on both BBC 2 and S4C.

The second concert was a celebration of Welsh composers, featuring music by Arwel Hughes, William Mathias, Paul Mealor and the festival’s new Music Director Edward-Rhys Harry  who also conducted the orchestra.

Both concerts featured the British Sinfonietta  consisting of professional musicians contracted by Absolute Music Services, along with Celesta Hire, Percussion Hire and Synth Hire.

Company

In June 2019 we provided the band for Canolfan Berfformio Cymru's production of Stephen Sondheim's ‘Company' at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff. The production featured MA Perfformio, MA Musical Theatre and BA Musical Theatre students, all of whom are studying their craft at under-graduate and post-graduate level.

As well as the band of professional musicians, we provided percussion hire and equipment hire (including music stand lights and a drum screen).

The Creation

We provided the British Sinfonietta for two performances of Haydn’s 'The Creation' in the first half of 2019.

On Saturday 13 April the orchestra performed the original full orchestra version with Swansea Philharmonic Choir at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea.

On Saturday 1 June the orchestra performed a new edition with The Athenaeum Singers in Warminster, published by Carus, which includes a reduced wind and brass orchestration by Joe Hickman. This reduces the standard double wind and large brass section to two Flutes, one Oboe, one Clarinet, one Bassoon, two Horns and one Trumpet. Reduced orchestrations for major works such as this can be hit and miss, but we are pleased to report that this version was very effective.

Full Scores and orchestral parts for both concerts were provided by our in-house Orchestral Hire Library, with additional equipment (such as music stand lights and Percussion Hire) provided for the second concert.

St Davids Cathedral Festival 2019

At the end of May 2019 we provided professional musicians for three performances at St Davids Cathedral in the space of two days. This was the fifth consecutive year we have provided musicians for St Davids Cathedral Festival, with memorable occasions in the past including a large-scale performance of Verdi’s Requiem, and a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s 'HMS Pinafore' with more than a little audience participation.

One of the concerts this year required a Brass Ensemble, so we provided the British Sinfonietta Brass Ensemble, consisting of four Trumpets, three Trombones, Tuba, Timpani and Percussion.

St Davids Cathedral has become something of a regular venue for us, with no fewer than seventeen engagements there since May 2015, including an evening with Sir Karl Jenkins conducting 'The Armed Man' as part of Milford Haven Music Festival in May 2017.

Bach’s Mass in B minor

May 2019 saw the first of the year’s two performances of Bach’s Mass in B minor by the British Sinfonietta. Widely hailed as one of the Baroque period’s choral masterpieces, on this occasion the orchestra was joined by Cardiff Bach Choir and their conductor Luke Spencer, with soloists Gail Pearson, Guy Withers, Keiron Connor Valentine and Philip Lloyd Evans. The venue was BBC Hoddinott Hall, at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

The orchestra’s second performance of the Mass in B minor will take place at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, on Sunday 8 December 2019. This special concert will mark the 60th anniversary of Swansea Philharmonic Choir, and will be conducted by Jonathan Rogers.

Multiple Orchestras

We are regularly asked to provide orchestras for more than one client on the same day, and this has never been a problem. Our pool of first-class professional musicians covers the whole of the UK, so we are never stuck for players.

A recent example was on Saturday 6 April 2019, when we provided one orchestra for Brockham Choral's performance of Dvorak’s Stabat Mater near London, and another for Swansea Bach Choir's performance of Fauré’s Requiem in South Wales.

Just one week earlier, on Saturday 30 March 2019, we provided one orchestra for Bracknell Choral Society's performance of works by Bruckner and Mendelssohn in Reading, and another for Woking Choral Society's performance of Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony in Woking.

Cathedral concerts in March 2019

In March 2019 the British Sinfonietta performed Mozart’s Requiem at two of the UK’s finest Cathedrals.

On Saturday 9 March 2019 the orchestra joined forces with Bristol Choral Society and conductor Hilary Campell at Bristol Cathedral, for a programme which also featured Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum.

On Saturday 23 March 2019 the orchestra joined forces with Cumbria Rural Choirs and conductor John Butt at Carlisle Cathedral, for a programme which also featured Haydn’s Seven Last Words.

On both occasions the musicians were contracted by Absolute Music Services. We also provided Percussion Hire, music stand lights, and all of the full scores and orchestral parts through our in-house Orchestral Hire Library.

Summer Holiday

In March 2019 we provided the band for Musicality Academy's production of Summer Holiday, at the Princess Royal Theatre in South Wales. We worked with the organisation for the first time in January 2013, for a production of Copacabana, and have provided professional musicians for various productions since.

Corau Rhys Meirion

In January 2019 we provided professional musicians for a television series featuring the Tenor Rhys Meirion. The sessions took place at the Tŷ Cerdd StudioWales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Each of the four sixty-minute episodes featured Rhys performing with a different choir, from various parts of Wales.

War Requiem in Swansea

On Sunday 2 December 2018 we provided the British Sinfonietta for a performance of Benjamin Britten’s epic War Requiem at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea. 

A total of 72 professional musicians were contracted, with a smaller chamber orchestra on-stage alongside the main orchestra.

Jonathan Rogers was tasked with conducting the large number of performers, which also included Swansea Philharmonic Choir and a children’s choir.

The Last Five Years - theatre tour

In November 2018 we provided the musicians for a professional theatre tour of Jason Robert Brown's musical ‘The Last Five Years’. The tour opened with a week at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, with a review in The Stage describing it as ‘visually and musically compelling’ and awarding it five stars.

Video Games Live - UK tour

In October and November 2018 we provided the musicians for Video Games Live on tour in the UK.

We have been the sole provider of orchestras for Video Games Live dates in the UK since 2015, which has included performances in Glasgow, London and Manchester.

As well as providing the British Sinfonietta orchestra we also provided Percussion Hire,  Synth Hire, and music stand lights.

The Dream of Gerontius

On Saturday 13 October 2018 we contracted a total of 73 professional musicians for Gloucester Choral Society's performance of Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’.

The venue was Gloucester’s glorious Cathedral, and conducting was the Cathedral’s Director of Music Adrian Partington.

As well as the orchestra, we also provided Percussion Hire, music stand lights, and orchestral scores and parts through our in-house Orchestral Hire Library.

Anfonaf Angel : Côr Rhys Meirion

On Monday 24 September 2018 we provided musicians for a recording session at Sain Studios in Caernarfon. The session involved recording a new version of the Welsh song ‘Anfonaf Angel’ by Robat Arwyn  for a television programme celebrating the song’s tenth anniversary.

Mumbles Festival of Music 2018

In September 2018 we provided musicians for this year’s Mumbles Festival of Music and the Arts, on the beautiful Gower Peninsula near Swansea in South Wales.

The highlight of the festival was a performance of Sir Karl Jenkins’ ‘Stabat Mater’, featuring the original vocalist Belinda Sykes. As well as the standard orchestral instruments we also provided a solo percussionist, and an ethnic woodwind specialist (covering Cor Anglais and Duduk).

Llandeilo Festival of Music 2018

In July 2018 we provided professional musicians and music hire for the closing event of Llandeilo Festival of Music. The British Sinfonietta was conducted by Eilir Owen Griffiths, alongside a handpicked group of singers and soloist Robyn Lyn Evans.

Cheltenham Music Festival 2018

In July 2018 we contracted 99 musicians for a performance of Berlioz’ epic Requiem for Cheltenham Music Festival  This was the British Sinfonietta's first appearance at the festival, and the venue was Gloucester Cathedral.

As well as musicians we provided Percussion Hire, music stand lights, and sheet music hire from our Orchestral Hire Library.

St Davids Cathedral Festival 2018

In July 2018 we provided musicians for St Davids Cathedral Festival for a fourth consecutive year. The Festival’s Artistic Director Oliver Waterer led the British Sinfonietta and Côr Dyfed Choir in a performance of Haydn’s ‘The Creation’.

As well as musicians we provided Percussion Hire, music stand lights, and sheet music hire from our Orchestral Hire Library.

Into the Woods

In March 2018 we provided the band for Canolfan Berfformio Cymru s production of Stephen Sondheim's ‘Into the Woods' at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff. The production featured BA Perfformio students, all of whom are studying their craft at university level.

As well as the band of professional musicians, we provided percussion hire and music stand lights.

Karl Jenkins’ Requiem in Penrith

In March 2018 we performed Karl Jenkins’ Requiem with Cumbria Rural Choirs at St Andrew’s Church in Penrith. This massed choir comprises singers from Wigton Choral SocietyKeswick Choral Society, Ullswater Choir, together with singers from all over Cumbria. They perform one large-scale concert per year. The concert was conducted by Ian Wright.

As well as booking the professional musicians comprising the British Sinfonietta we also provided music stand lights and percussion hire, including a number of specialist instruments. We also provided a Sakuhachi soloist.

Sweeney Todd

The Addams Family in Concert

On Thursday 26 October 2017 we contracted 78 professional musicians for the world premiere of ‘The Addams Family in Concert’ at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This was the third large-scale concert at the Royal Albert Hall we contracted the orchestra for in the space of less than a week.

The Cinematic Sinfonia was conducted by Jessica Cottis.

James Horner: A Life in Music

On Tuesday 24 October 2017 we contracted 95 professional musicians for a celebration of the life and music of James Horner at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Cinematic Sinfonia was conducted by Ludwig Wicki, who was a personal friend of the late composer.

Michael Giacchino at 50

On Friday 20 October 2017 we contracted 88 professional musicians for a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall celebrating Academy Award winning composer Michael Giacchino’s 50th birthday.

The Cinematic Sinfonia was conducted by Ludwig Wicki and Michael Giacchino, and there were numerous special guests appearing on stage, including J. J. Abrams.

Thoroughly Modern Millie

In July 2017 we provided the band for Musicality Academy's production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, at the Princess Royal Theatre in South Wales. We worked with the organisation for the first time in January 2013, for a production of Copacabana, and have provided professional musicians for various productions since.

Llanelli Proms 2017

On Saturday 24 June 2017 we contracted the orchestra for the Llanelli Proms for a fifth consecutive year. The programme featured orchestral classics, choral classics and all of the usual Last Night of the Proms repertoire. The British Sinfonietta was conducted by John Hywel Williams.

Deuawdau Rhys Meirion

In April and May 2017 we provided professional musicians for a television series featuring the Tenor Rhys Meirion  The sessions took place at the Tŷ Cerdd StudioWales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Each of the six thirty-minute episodes featured Rhys performing duets with some of Wales’ most popular musical artists.

An Evening with Sir Karl Jenkins

On Saturday 6 May 2017 we contracted the orchestra for a concert at Milford Haven Music Festival, with Sir Karl Jenkins conducting an evening of his own music in the majestic surroundings of St Davids Cathedral.

A total of 71 professionals were contracted for the British Sinfonietta  along with a great deal of Percussion Hire.

Joe Leader - Rite of Passage

On Monday 20 February 2017 we contracted orchestral string players for a recording session at RAK Studios in London. The repertoire being recorded was for a new album featuring Saxophonist Joe Leader.
